From april 11. to 22. 2016 was the thirteenth edition of Frisian Flag. Frisian Flag is the North European version of exercises like Red Flag and Maple Flag in the USA and Canada. The exercise in it’s current form exsists since 1999, but it’s origins go back to 1992.
Large scale excersises like Frisian Flag are meant to practice international cooperation in conflict area’s. Air Refueling is part of the exercises. This year around seventy aircraft from Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Poland, the UK and the USA took part in the exercises in Danish, German and Dutch airspace.
Every day between 8.00 am and 4.30 pm, fifty aircraft took off for morning and afternoon missions. Depending on the wind, many spotters were watching from the Marssum or Jelsum side of the airbase.
